From my understanding of these fish their natural habitat is tiny puddles.:) Mine was living in a 1 gallon bowl with marbles & bamboo shoots until someone knocked down the bowl, and broke it.;(

Spoil

Mine was in a 20 Gal with heater, aquaclear for 40 gallons 20% water change every week. All I can say he lived to be an old man... lol:tub:

Oh I almost forgot, he liked sleeping in the skull figurine.

you are absolutely correct! these fish live in puddles in different locations and mosquito's lay there larva on top of the puddles. this is why most "Betta" food ingredients is primairly mosquito larva because that is there natural diet. they do not have a controlled dorsal fin or swim bladder so this is why they do not like current in the water and prefect sitting water (aka the bowl) so dont feel bad. if anything you should see how they are shipped. no joke its slightly larger then a dime bag lol. with maybe 10-15 ml of water in it. everyone is like "Oh god thats so cruel" but in reality thats confertible for them. the more water the harder it is for them to swim, which can cause them to die because they do not have the strength to swim around for long priods of time. this is why they really just sit there.

Aside from African cichlids these are my favorite freshwater fish. I had a nice collection as a teenager. I also breed them successfully for a while. The nicest male was in a planted 10g with some females. The others were in 2.5G tanks with airstones.

actually betas DONT live in puddles, they live in rice patties and slow moving shallow streams and ponds. here's two articles for you to read about the ;) http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/anabantids2/p/betta.htm, http://ezinearticles.com/?history-and-background-of-betta-fish&id=427181, and also http://www.siamsbestbettas.com/intro.html

i used to breed breed bettas for a bit, it was pretty challenging when i had no idea what i was doing :shhh:

We had a Betta at the spot where I'm working light duty while recovering from an accident and hoping to get back to my firehouse- another light duty guy had got him there like 2 years before I came there- that guy had since gone but the fish(probie) remained. He was a cool purple betta and had an attitude lol. He liked me though- he was originally in a goldfish bowl and no one really took great care of him but I felt guilty lookin at him all day just sittin there. So I went to a LFS and bought a new 2.5 gallon tank a nano filter, some pink, red and blue gravel and a plastic plant. Made him so happy swam around in spurts. (He just sat still ALL the time in the original bowl and never really moved- I thought he was dead half the time) and he slept in the plant right under the surface. Everytime I walked up to the tank hed flare out his gills at me- thought he hated me since I was the only one that watched him or walked up to the tank.- but turns out he would do that to tell me he was hungry- I was the only one that fed him, sounds silly but after he flared I noticed after the first few times that he would look up at the surface for pellets. Also realized he only did it once he saw me grab the food container. He grew on me pretty big and was really cool- I went on vacation for 3 weeks, came back and was saddened to find out he had passed away while I was gone.:frown: Now his tank just sits in the basement covered in aluminum foil. At least his last few months were good I guess.
