I see that there are a lot of great photographers here on MR.

This great/incredibly addicting hobby has pulled me into yet ANOTHER hobby.

Photography.

I own a decent P&S - Canon Powershot SD780IS Digital Elph

But I'm really thinking about getting into the D-SLR side of things.

Now obviously photography is another very expensive hobby...

But I was wondering if there is anyway of being economical about it and still getting a decent camera?

Or is sort of like - if you're not going to lay down the money, then its not worth getting into at all?

Of course one of the main reasons I'm interested in the D-SLR style of cameras is that amazing macro shots they can take, besides all the other cool things.. seeing MOIDOL's panoramic shot was pretty cool too.

I have tweaked with the settings of my P&S.. and I have been able to get some "decent" pics... maybe one or two that really made me impress my self... haha.

Are there any D-SLR (and I'm assuming with a decent macro lens as I'll need one to do macro-photography) which can be had for.. lets say

~$350-400.. of course less is better.. but I can't be too picky can I? haha.

I've seen a lot of people on the site using the Nikon D-40 or D-Whatever..

But they seem to be very expensive..

I thought Canon was a pretty good company (according to my consumer reports magazine).. and I'm pretty satisfied, but I know there is much more which can be accomplished with a D-SLR.

Anyway.. if any that are into this whole photography business could shed a little light on this for me... I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I have a nikkon d3000. It's the entry level dslr w a 55-200mm lens. Works for me. Expect to spend around 500 or better for your first. I recommend taking a trip to j and r in lower manhattan to check out equipment.

well i have one camera its one and you can't take pictures too fast but i does take decent pictures. Its a Canon 60d not 60d i think i got the body for 200 and my macro lens which is also a canon is about 100 now. I looked up the body and can't find any online right now but if you can find one its a great body. Check ebay.

You can get a great dslr for a good price if your willing to buy an older model- by that I mean instead of the Canon Rebel T2I you can get the T1I at a shop that still sells them. You dont need the latest and greatest BODY- just a very good lense. The lense makes the pics anyway. A lot of the features you wont use on the new ones anyway so save yourself some coin. Get the previous model and youll have more money to get an extra lense or two. Just my $0.02......... Good luck with the purchase.

I agree with Jimmy. You can find a year old or two models of the Rebels which are great at a real good price, around 200-400$ or the nikons like the D90 which are great bodies around the 250$ price range. My cousin picked up a week used nikon D90 for 180$ with the starter lense so deals can be found if you look around.

You will have to spend the money on the lenses though, most prices don't drop much unless it was rebuilt. The macro lenses from canon, 60mm and 100mm, are going for 400 and 500$. You can find them cheaper at some shops but thats what your going to spend. IMO, its not worth paying the 250 for a 500$ lense off ebay thats "used" as you will quickly pay the rest of the 500$ in repairs if one of the sensors fails on you. My cousin lost about 1500$ in used lenses that have been breaking slowly, not even getting 50 pics out of 2.

All in all, for a body, macro lense and a descent mid range lense for standard everyday shots you will spend 1100-1500$ just to start up.
