Pentamirrors are darker and usually has less coverage then pentaprisms. They use more economical materials to bounce the light through the viewfinder. The plus side is it's cheaper to employ and it's also a lot lighter.

Len, perhaps I'm nitpicking but it's not totally dependent on the lens. For example, the 10D's processor made great strides over the D60, even the 1D in reducing the amount of noise at ISO400 and above... don't forget, we now have sensors and processors behind the lens. I'll agree the lens is the majority of it, but certainly not 100%.

Well I had my first night of shooting this camera and wow is it ever great!

I am very very impressed! The speed of focus is comparable to the 10d's that I have used and the clearity is just top notch (to bad my spelling was not). Well the lens that comes with is fast but is lacking a good focus ring but that is okay as I will use AF most of the time anyway.

Well here is one of the first shots that I took with the camera...

Looks like nice even lighting. The built-in on my minolta tends to wash stuff and create harsh shadows out at close distances.

Yes I have shot upwards of 100 shots with it now and am very very impressed. I have not used the non auto mode other then to set a focus point and I have yet to use any other lens but man I must say that I really like it.

Nice pic. Nice color too. I'm impressed (but then again I've only bought cannon cameras!)

Hey Trevor (or anyone else that's picked up this camera in the meantime), how about an update on the camera and some more test-shots. There's a slim chance I might be able to sell my current setup and I'm really looking at this digital rebel if I can.

Big concerns for me:

* Battery--it's a proprietary battery, right? Not AA Ni-MH. How's the battery life on it so far? Any idea how spendy replacement batteries are?

* Macro--how does the included lens do with macro work? Does the camera have a macro setting or is it entirely lens-dependent?

* AF--is the autofocus extremely quick and accurate? I do a great deal of sports photography and need something with good AF.

* DOF preview--how well does that work?

sharkky,
I picked up the EOS 10D instead of the Rebel. Our local Best Buy had both at competitive prices. The AF is very quick. I also have a Sony DSC-S85 and the 10D blows it away. I have to anticipate the shots with the S85. With the 10D you shoot what you see, but it seems to be more to the right of center than it appears through the lens. The batteries are around $60.00. You really need a 512mb Compact Flash or larger. B&H has them for about $150.00, but I found one on sale at Best Buys for $135.00. When I filled up the Compact Flash (512) it had pulled down the battery enough that the software couldn't find the camera to download the shots. I bought an extra Compact Flash card and a couple of lenses. The attached shots were taken with the Canon 50mm Macro lens on automatic. The depth of field is a little lacking with the 50mm Macro on automatic, but the shots are decent. There is a little bit of a learning curve with advanced features, but I'm certain it will be worth the effort. Be prepared to spend quite a bit extra on assessories.

okay well sorry have not had much time latley to take extra test pictures but I will try to take some for you in the next day or two.

As far as the battery goes I have been rather impressed, as I said I have not used it much latley but I have taken about 200 shots over the last week and shown it off to a number of people and have yet to recharge the battery (although I am sure it is getting close).

The focus is great and VERY VERY fast! If you have used a 10d (as I have) it is very close to the same speed!

There is a macro setting on the dial on top of the camera but I think that it is more dependant on the lens that you have, the included lens is rather good as that is all that I have access to but I have been rather impressed with it, could do a bit better on the macro's but I won't complain.

Yes as Dizzy stated you will need to get a large CF card I would mabie even look at the 1GB cards as they are getting cheaper every day!

Here is my only complant, in auto mode you can not select one AF spot for the camera to go to but not a big deal. The only other small thing is that the included lens has a really poor manual focus ring.

Generally I am very impressed with the camera and I have done a few prints with it as well and WOW I was really blown away there.

Well I guess if you can toss the bucks at it I would really recomend it, as I love mine!

Again I will try to post some more shots in the next day or two.

okay here are a few images that I took last night, did this in a full span of 2 minutes so not the best sample of the camera but I am still impressed.

These are on full auto mode with the macro setting and the included lens.

This is a toy of my little girl's Grover:

and a few quick fish shots for you:

that is all if I get time for some more I will try to get some better ones, I am trying to figure out how to take a cool night shot with a long exposure of some cars on the highway but I don't know how if any one can give me some tips please let me know, and I will post my results.

thanks

PS If you want to see a number of baby pictures with the camera just go to my web page at http://homepage.mac.com/trevors/ after page 5 or 6 they should be mostly with the 300d.[/url]
