If you have a crappy camera like I do (Samsung Digimax 300) without a zoom feature, buy yourself a large magnifying glass and experiment holding it in front of the camera. It only works well with things within a few inches of the glass but you can get some nice detail shots that you otherwise couldn't. I think a larger lense with not too much curve would work best, I'm still experimenting.

I was just getting in the habit of setting my HP620 photosmart to the highest setting (2.1 Mpixels) and getting as close to the tank or object as I could without it blurring then cutting the section out in PS to "zoom" in on it.

I hadnt considered the glass.
Do you hold it with your hand? or do you rig it up to sit steadily in front of the lense?

As an additional note I just found

http://www.bugeyedigital.com

for folks with cheap-o cameras... for my photosmart 620 that can be no closer to a subject than 8"

These guys make a LENSE ADAPTER for Cameras that don't have capability for aditional lenses!!!

I can get close up lenses and other stuff for my cheap cam!!
essentially its just a threaded holder that screws into the tripod hole!

I'm going to get one and try it out
