There is still a lot of room for improvement on the focus part.
I'm using manual pre-focus as my camera's auto-focus isn't fast enough.
A fast shutter speed would help.
Those posted are a few acceptable ones out of a few hundreds
I just keep shooting since there is no film cost.
Canon G3 is a very good camera.
Spend more time with it and it should reward you with excellent result
Oh, believe me that I spent time with it...
Lots of frustrating time. Autofocus when it works is great. The proble is that it doesn't work all the time (despite moving the "autofocus square", it always finds something else to focus on) and it's slow.
The problem is that for the manual focus there is an entire range that looks "sharp" on the small lcd screen, but when you download the picture you have to be very lucky to actually be exactly on the right focus distance (about 1/10 of the pictures or less are well focused).
But I'm going to spend some more time, maybe I can work around those things (I'll mostly work at tricking autofocus to work). However, one day I'll buy myself a digital SRL (when they'll be cheap enough to be able to afford them .
Sorry to hear about the problem you are having with your G3.
As a matter of fact, I have compared pics taken with G3 (my colleague has one) and my minolta.
The color and sharpness looks better on the pic from the G3.
If you want to have more of your pic to be in focus, maybe you can try to choose a smaller aperture eg f8 instead of f2.8....etc
But then exposure time will be longer and it would be best to use a tripod.
Maybe you would like to post a problematic pic and lets hear some advice from the more experienced photographers in this forum ?
