My wife is pushing for this camera. $999 seems a bit steep, so give me some good reasons to just stick with what we have.

So do you love it, hate it, have alternative recomedations....

Oh man, that digital rebel is my dream camera!!!
I mean, forget those wimpy coolpix's with their 8 megapixels! who needs that much?! With the versatility the Canon gives you (read: interchangable lens!!!), you wont need to blow a pic up endlessly!
Im hoping to get one as a graduation present... (rich uncle). Nah, your wife knows it, and I know it, and Im sure a lot of others know it (yourself included!); that is one sweet camera. But I agree, with a price that high and the market being based on features like megaipxels and storage, it appears substandard to the Nikons and other megapixel-monsters in the pro-sumer category.
All I can say is either wait a bit, or hit eBay! Id take it over a Nikon in a heart-beat!
Hope I havent pushed you over the proverbial edge on that one!

PS. http://www.adorama.com has it for $915!

Just a note...
She has the Rebel 2000 35mm, and a few lenses. These are interchangeable with the digital, so at least I will not have to spring for more lenses.

How far away is Christmas?

I shoot a 300D (the Digital Rebel's numerical name) and absolutely love it. I'm basically a semi-professional photographer (backup team photog for a local pro sports team and shoot weddings and such on the side) and am very comfortable with the 300D in such situations.

For the type and quality of camera you're getting, $999 is an absolute steal. Before Nikon came out with their D70, the next cheapest D-SLR was around $1400 w/o lens.

Also, fwiw, I came from a minolta 'prosumer' camera. It was nice, but not in the same league as the 300D.

Thats what I wanna know too! Although I dont have any of the old rebel lenses, Im pretty sure I can pick them up really chapely around here!

Christmas is 7 months and 7 days away! I should have posted this yesterday, and waited till 5:00 PM, so I could say seven hours away!

Naw, dont wait that long! What would happen to your summer vacation? Without the Rebel?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
... Just imagining the horror of a missed photo opportunity, or inadequate equipment when you need it most!

The owner of the LPS (local photo store) said that the cannon lenses are interchangable, but if you have sigma lenses they need to be "rechipped" so the autofocus will work correctly. Says it is of minimal cost, but you are without a lense for a couple weeks.

I am not worried about summer vacation too much. We have a nice little Pentax OptioS that I LOVE. Mostly because wherever we go I end up carring the camera bag, and the Optio is TINY.....

The dRebel is a nice camera but was made to be affordable. It does'nt have any mirror lock up and is made with a plastic body instead of a better magnesium alloy matterial.

"Mirror Lock Up (now that we know what the heck the mirror is) is a great feature that lets you lock the mirror in the up position to reduce vibration, obviously only in the SLR. When the SLR takes a picture the mirro rises (slaps) and then the shutter behid it opens and closes. During medium long exposures the slight vibration of the mirror impacting on the upstroke can blur the picture. This is really only an issue from about a 15th to a 1/4 sec exposure. The vibration is very short and longer than a quarter sec it has died out and the incoming light will override any initial blurring. If the vibration lasts for 1/10th sec and you need 1 second to expose the image the first 1/10th will have no impact on the final."

Maybe that thread will convince her. FWIW, I also shoot the 300D although I really wanted the D70 I couldn't afford anoughter 300-400$ with no lens.

Alright then, which would you suggest, Ben; the D70 or the 10D?
After a brief skimming of features, the 10D is relatively similar to the 300D, except for the obvious and previously mentioned facotrs...
But where do you think the D70 stands? Good value for what youre getting? I dont remember, but doesnt the D70 have a faster buffer (like 12 pics continous burst or something?) and a wider rang in terms of shutter speeds? Does either one of them have mirror lock-up?
I want the best, right? So tell me what you think is the best!

If you are really serious about buying a new dslr or any digital for that matter go to www.dpreview.com. You can do a side-byside comparision of any digital camera currently available and his reviews are top notch.

They even have a recording of the sound of the 300D shooting continualy vs. continual shooting from the D70. The D70 blows it away hands down, I really like the D70.

"As you can see from the waveforms below (which represent twenty seconds for each camera) the D70 manages 44 frames in 20 seconds, the EOS 300D just 23. More importantly the D70 shoots the first 17 of those frames at the full 3 frames per second, the EOS 300D managing only 4 frames at its slower 2.5 frames per second. Kudos Nikon." dpreview.com, page 4 of the NIkon D70 review.

I would let him know that a camera like that will take me a LONG time to get to know, he better just buy one more so he can have his own!

Body, body, body...... Hmmmm... No lense, or am I just an idiot?...

Hey, does anyone know about USM and IS lenses for Nikons? Do they even exist for Nikons? I know Canon makes good use of them... And I WANT ONE!!!

...Anyone?

They exist, but nikon calls them a different name, and they're a few years behind canon in terms of development and sophistication.

That's the problem with cameras--everything is a trade-off. The d70 has a better burst rate, but the canon is lower priced, has better image quality (especially at low ISO--the d70 doesn't even have an ISO 100!), and has better high-end lenses.

Now I understand why photography and reef keeping go hand in hand:
1) lotsa tradoffs
2) lotsa options
3) lotsa cash

Now if I could just teach the fish to take pictures or put some coral in my camera.....

IF you've got the cannon glass, go with the 10d. Skip the rebel, and get the good camera.

After I bought my 35mm rebel, I immediately wanted a better body. I saved and scrimped, sold my Rebel XS, and bought the Elan IIe. Love the bigger body, and the steel lens mount. The rebel's was plastic.

Additionally, when you boil it all down, do the extra features available in the 10D or the d70 make it worth the extra money to the "average" user?

Seems like unless you photo some real highspeed action, or do very long exposues, the 300D is the best bet. Plus if you still want to spend the money buring a hole in your pocket, you can pick up some lenses.

I wanted the D70 as I am getting into U/W photography more then land shooting and I hate missing the shot of the fish that zipped by. Also the more shots you can knock off when you have a chance the better chance of one coming out great.

All that said I couldnt swing the extra cash for the D70 with no lens. After a lens its a $500 difference. So far I have loved my 300D, and think it will serve my purpose. And of course Sharkky is right, it has the better sensor, CMOS.
