As to an answer to your question....

You can use many graphics programs to shrink images to a useable size. Photoshop is probably the most widely used, but even MS Paint (if I recall) will allow you to open and shrink them. Perhaps the program you use on your computer to download and view them will also let you. Ideally, you select an image size around 600 pixels at maximum in either direction. That allows it to not take up more than a whole page on most people's monitors.

Photoshop (both 7.0 and elements) has a great 'save for web' feature, that allows you to resize the photo to specific pixel sizes, and also further compresses the filesize of the image. Best little function in th eworld for posting photos online.

I personally like irfanview, which is a free program. It has a resize feature where you can either specify pixels or %, it's fast, and it's small.

LView Pro is another one, that allots you a mostly permanent free program (although it reminds you to register every so often if you don't).

ACDSee V.5.0 or ThumbsPlus both offer functions that allow you to batch rename and resize images. They're both very good. downloads.cnet.com has them I think.

You know, I was told about irfanview last year sometime. Is this a Windows-obligate feeder? Right now I'm experimenting with the free download of ImageForge in my Windows partition. Still getting accustomed (and having issues with particular filetypes) GIMP in my Linux platform. I still prefer Linux overall, though.

Unfortunately, Irfanview is an obligate Windows feeder. Without Windows, it slowly runs out of fatal exceptions to eat, gets skinny, and starves to death...

Hehehe, SM, still having trouble getting things to run on Linus? Gosh, I appreciate the sentiment of getting away from Windows, but it seems like a lot of work!

acasden,
My only addition to what others have said is-

DO NOT, whatever you do- DO NOT use Microsoft Photo Editor that comes with Windows. It sucks whale blow hole big time. It will ruin your favorite images just by clicking "Save."

Not exactly a "typo".. unless you're not hip to the development of Linux, eh?

See, hd, here's the thing. Windows is generally seen as an "easier" OS to work with, but it is not at all NOT without its problems. Hell, I was working in my Windows platform just this morning. Now, I have a problem in Windows, there's not much help available, either within the machine itself or out on the net. Let's say I know what the problem is, do you think I can get at the module/kernel to correct the problem (for instance, a hosing of the USB detection)? HELL NO, I can't. With Linux, I can, and if I need help, there is practically more help than I can shake a stick at, FOR FREE. I like that, I like being the one to make decisions that go beyone what folder I'm going to put this download into.

The Gimp is a pretty weird name for a photo edit proggie, but there's humor in it. I like that, too. :D

Seamaiden,

Many years ago, when I was a young(er) lad, I used Unix extensively (remember X?) I can still read my way through a shell script (well, almost). After a short period of time in the private sector, I succumbed to the dark side of the force, and became a MS-Windows user. I'm afraid that my resistance was futile, and I have been assimilated.

If the tools that I used were available on Linux, I'd seriously consider it. For certain applications, I'd run away from MS-Windows (or relatives) as fast as I could.

I don't know offhand of any Linux-based pixel jpeg resizer, but I'm sure they're out there. I learned about Irfanview from another of my interests, when I posted full size pictures (1.4 MB each) on my personal website, and a kindly expert suggested Irfanview. It works for me.

I agree with the comment that MS Photo Editor, umm, vacuums in a spectacular fashion.

I have Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw suite, and other tools that can resize jpegs (not to mention annotate, blend, etc.). But for a quick resizing, Irfanview is incredibly fast and simple.

Regards,

Hy

GIMP works great for Linux. It is a Photoshop clone wannabe :).
Really, I love it. Of course, there are the command line filters
jpegtopnm file.jpg | pnmscale ... | pnmtojpeg > smallfile.jpg
But that's for hard core Linux users only :).

I just ordered today a MAC laptop with OS X. I can't wait to get my hands on it: I understand that is a nice combination of Linux power and flexibility without the headaches (will also have PowerPoint which is very important for me).

All the best,
Mihai

I love Photoshop, it has the most features, but also the most price, if you just want to post on reefs.org, then go with elements (a stripped version of Photoshop) it is not bad at all, my wife loves to use it, photoshop is just too much for her, too many options. I use photoshop CS, and love it. But $600+ for a program is a bit much if you dont need all the functions, i think you can pick up elements for $100 or less.
