Was taking pics to sell my 20 freshwater setup, and got a good one of 'Stereo' my monodactylus. I've acclimated him to freshwater over a three year period. (change out two gallons of water a month and replace it with freshwater.)

(if anyone's looking for a complete 20 gallon setup in NYC drop me a line!)

Wow, he hasn't slurped up the swordtails yet?

May I ask you why you took so long to get him "on fresh"?

I'm just lazy.

basically, when I dumped the two or three gallons of brackish out, I'd replace them with fresh. I maybe did it every six months or so. Whenever the algea got bad. I'd scrape and syphon, pull the rocks out and bleach and rinse them, then put them all back. What water I syphoned off I'd replace with fresh.

He keeps the swordtail babies in check. I don't have to feed him that much! There's a section of the tank with an egg-crate divider, so they do have aplace to hide.

Nice. Are those wild swords?

Is it me, or are you working on slimming down the numbers of tanks you have? I thought that you're also going to be setting up a freshie tank for your girlfriend, is that still in the works? If so, is that why you're trimming your own systems down?

I had my 3 in fresh in the first month. I love them. Anyone ever think about keeping them in saltwater? I wonder what the consequences would be.

Swordtails, or the monos? They're another estuarine fish, if I recollect. Again, as with mollies, I'm not sure if the highly bred strains appreciate that fluctuation of salinity as much as those that remain closer to their wild roots. There are some fish that actually require that shift in salinity, a requirement at times to help spur breeding and spawning.

The Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific has a great display of fully salt monos, panfry size!

I am ERADICATING the number of tanks I have. I'm moving into a sublet for July/August, and only want to take 1 with me. I want to have one REALLY nice tank rather than 4 okay ones. It will be a 20 gallon reef. I'll combine my 10 and my 15h. I'll sell everything I don't use for the 20.

I just got the cc statment and I've spent almost $200 on it already, and I haven't bought trim, 1/4" oak ply, or my 150wDE. Hopefully I can trade one of my other tanks with pc's for a ballast and reflector.

I may also sell my 7gal bow that I was going to use for a fuge.

The girlfriend just painted her room and bought a red leather chair. So she doesn't have the cash for a tank, and doesn't want the 20. She wants something like a 40 or 55. :) she want gourami's again.
