lol investigator -- that pic is hella GARFED. and i can see the trace lines where you replaced the real background with your gradient.
i try to take a minimalist approach -- don't ever replace anything or else you're cheating. you can mess with levels and sharpness and saturation, but anything more and it's no longer a photo.
here's my version -- corrected for level, color, and foreground sharpness:

eric -- i think your pics are great for your first time out with the camera. make sure you have a tripod for the macros (you can get a cheapy for like 20 bucks) -- the balance makes a huge difference for closeup focus.
