It's not the camera really. I am not a,"photographer", so I can say this without inhibitions. It is all in the photo processing.

lol investigator -- that pic is hella GARFED. :D and i can see the trace lines where you replaced the real background with your gradient. :P

i try to take a minimalist approach -- don't ever replace anything or else you're cheating. you can mess with levels and sharpness and saturation, but anything more and it's no longer a photo.

here's my version -- corrected for level, color, and foreground sharpness:

i'm sure some of the pros on the forum could spank my version but good. 8O

eric -- i think your pics are great for your first time out with the camera. make sure you have a tripod for the macros (you can get a cheapy for like 20 bucks) -- the balance makes a huge difference for closeup focus.
