*jealousy*

Btw were some of those more purple pictures taken under actinic only? or 20k bulbs? I'm still trying to find the trick to taking pictures under actinics and getting them to show up like they look to my eyes.

Those were 20kK bulbs... my Iwasaki's (6500s) had just turned off... there is no secret, it basically just can't be done unless they are bright enough. Any blue lighting really throws digicams for a loop.

Huh? What's the problem with blue lightning? Anyway, do you do your white balance for the 20K shots or do you go with auto-white-balance?

I think the problem with blue lighting (more specifically PURPLE lighting since actinic are much further into the spectrum than blue even though its "next door" as far as Roy G. Biv is concerned :)) is that the CCDs in the cameras may not be sensitive to that spectrum enough to pick it up, and as a result might overcompensate in another color it "thinks" is coming in.

As Sanjay so gloriously put it... I don't like my tank to look like Papa Smurf peed in it!

As to color balance, stfsuphysics is correct... with only 20kKs running, white balance cannot compensate for it. I've tried and given up. I just aim to take pictures with the Iwasaki's running as well... makes life easier and the colors are more real.

Thanks for the clarification. I like the Papa Smurf visual... very... suggestive :). I always wanted to explain what I feel when I see a BLUE tank, but I could never quite express it. I feel the same relief when I found that the colored epoxy-colored pebbles people keep in their freshwater tanks are called "clown puke" :)

You could always 'force' the camera to white-balance correctly by getting a waterproof whitecard or greycard and set the white balance based off of that. (not all cameras may have that ability)

Actually I cannot. I don't know if its something specific to the camera's sensor or what, but I have tried to force a white balance under the 20kKs and it doesn't work. Almost everything becomes lavender (most likely due to so little of any other wavelength present). Oh well.

It looks surprisingly devoid of fish! But it looks great coral-wise!

BTW, that gorgeous frogspawn smiled at me again. How are your buds doing? I remember it shed a bunch a few months ago... ;-)

Have you tried forcing it with a whitecard, or just manually setting the wb?

FWIW, my 20d can actually be adjusted to specific Kelvin temps. That's pretty slick! :D

Mihai - lack of fish is due to me cleaning the front, then shutting off all the pumps, and then having all the halides on "after hours".... guess they were a little put out... its amazing that 25 fish can vanish like that huh?

*hands Bingo a towel* (Thanks!)

Sharrky - I have tried setting against a piece of white plastic inside the tank (literally, as I have an UW housing I have used in the tank). Works great for adjusting with all of the halides on. Still turns everything lavender with only the 20kKs on. I SO want a dSLR!!!! You need to stop inciting me. ;)
