just bought a camera.. spur of the moment type thing.

an olympus D-535

like this one..

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/olymp ... ndex.shtml

i have yet to open the package and don't know jack about cameras.
one thing that sucks is that the memory card was 70.00 dollars at the store. i thought i would look around online for a cheaper alternative before forking out that kind of cash.

so let me know how dumb i am for buying this and then i can return it.

No white balance!!!!! I say return it. Your camera will need to have WB controls if you want to take aquarium pics. That, and a good macro mode is really what you should aim for.

I actually don't have a recommendation at this point, but I'll look around. Anything with WB and good macro capabilities would do. Nikon cams come to mind.

I say return it too

Here is what you are looking for, there are so many options its best to look for the features you want and the price you want

you want around a 4 or higher megapixel

you want a high "OPTICAL" zoom, if it has a digital zoom you can ignore that as a feature because you can do the same thing on a computer by clicking on zoom. It doesn't give you any new details

You want to be able to attach other lenses, even if you have to buy an adaptor, you need to have that option or you will kick yourself later

You need to be able to manually focus

You need to be able to adjust the white balance

You need to be able to set the speed

Hope that helps, Digital ones are getting cheaper every day, I payed 650 for my Canon Powershot G3 and I do not even want to know what they are going for now, it would make me sick

I've had a decent experience with my olympus digital. It is weaker than Nikon in the macro focus range, but otherwise produces pretty good images.

Of course, I just bought myself a d70, so I can't really talk about needs vs greeds at this point!

My suggestions: olympus 4040 or 5050 ; nikon (forgotten the #s offhand, but one of the 4+ mp series)

ok... i am taking it back tomorrow and want to know what you guys think of these as replacements...

pentax

olympus

canon

fuji

that was as best as i could narrow my selection down reading reviews on the net.
i have to admit that i am really over my head here.
taking reef shots is great but this will do other things as well.. action shots, etc.

these are linked to the store that i will be shopping at so the price is what i am paying.

if i were to narrow this down pronto i might head out tonight but i doubt i will be so bold.

Here is a link to a review of the canon

I say that one just because its the brand I have, and it has all of the important features that mine has.

I think you will like it.

Do check it out from other places though, it seems to me that there is a discrepency between the number of pixels in the review and in the link you gave

good luck

With just a quick look this one looks interesting. I have no first hand knowledge of this camera. It has a custom white balance and a macro mode that lets you get closer then an inch. According to the Fry location it costs 260. But at the Wolf /Ritz Camera its 199.00 I don't know if Fry would price match.

You can't beat Nikon for macro focus. No way. :)

Used Coolpix 880s are on eBay for $110. Can't beat that price, and I bought mine used to begin with.

Just my two cents...

Peace,

Chip

What ever you decide on...I suggest checking out buydig.com. I just picked up a Canon there for about $300 less than most. The service was great/fast. I got what I ordered with all US warranty cards etc. All serial # matched etc. I also used them for a Canon macro lens. I would use them again for sure.

Canon or Nikon IMO. I have a Canon G2 and 20D. The macro/close focus on the G2 is excellent. My folks have one of the cheaper version Canons. It was under $200. Despite lacking many of the G2 features..it takes great pictures. I have not used Nikon digis..but do like my 35mm FM2N with various prime Nikkor lenses. Stick with one of these two brands IMO.

Happy huntint..ughm shooting.
