Help me out here..

I am fairly good at taking shots with my canon G3 Powershot with the tank lights on. However, There are some things that only happen at night and I want to capture them. The tank lights are off and the room lights are on. Looking through the glass with my naked eyes I can see colors and detail that is totally lost when I take a picture. Plus the creatures in question are moving slighly in the current so any extended picture taking will be blurry.

What is the solution?

Its really the only time its possible to take a picture of the foot of my anenome, during the day the foot is impossible to see...

Well until a "pro" help you I'll tide you over.

The colors via actinic/moonlights are really out of the sensor range of most CCDs as a result you'll get an over exposure (which is why the lack of detail). As to the moving stuff, use a flash, if the stuff is out, chances are it won't retract before you get the shot, or use an external light, flip it on, take your picture, flip it off.

Alright, I am going to go take some shots and post the results, I promise they won't be very good, in fact rather discouraging seeing the rest of the pictures in this forum, but you will be able to see what I am talking about....

Here it is, I cropped the shot drastically to get a small enough one to post with the pixels at actual size so its clearer what I am talking about.

I realize there is very little light for the camera to work with, but is this the best shot I am going to be able to get at night?

This one was taken in auto mode, the camera selected iso 400, there was no flash because I turned it off.

So, what can I do to improve the shot taken in the mostly dark?


in case you are wondering, I am just looking to get a clear picture with the colors the same as what I am seeing when I look at it in the dark. This picture is pretty close to the way it looks with the lights off, its just that its soo grainy...
