Yes an exquisite fairy wrasse ( Cirrhilabrus exquisitus) All fairy wrasses exude this same kind of mucous cocoon at night as a form of protection while they sleep.

Good question House. My guess, and it is only a guess is that the mucous inhibits attack from parasites and may mask detection via scent from larger nocturnal predators.

It's a very nifty trick! I've wanted to get a photo of my Six Line Wrasse doing this, but it's always after ligts out when he makes his little sleeping bag. I can never get the shot without waking him.

Cool pic Jim. My Lubbocks frequently builds his cocoon near the front corner of the tank and if I get near I can see his eyes move as he watches me.
I recall reading they build them so their scent can't be detected, but next time I'll just ask Scientific Randy..lol
