dont go with the first link it seems too low for that camera might be refurbished, call the company up and see if they have 100% money back I know a place that sells it for $439 and its a site that you can trust

the first site says brand new factory sealed with 1 year usa warranty?
so still could be refurbished?...that would really suck..

how about the second link...its from the circuitcity outlet(that could be refurbished )
comes with 2 lenses for $484...comes with the stock one and a 55-200mm telephoto lens..

yea with the standard 18-55 Nikon lens. i had to use the Nikon program to adjust lighting to 10000 k or all the pictures would have came out blue. So far i have not figured out how to take pictures of coral with actinic lighting. BUT with the newer models there is built in options that allow you to make adjustments on the light temperature. so you can take any picture.

I would never buy electronics such as cameras from craigslist or ebay. Most of them are fixer-uppers. If you do chose to go with a refurb go to an actual store that may offer a warranty on such item. In example the following link

B&H is a very well respected company

However, after doing some research on this item, there is only a 15$ to 20$ dollar difference between new and refurbished. Definitely go with brand new item only.

..im used to cameras with image stabilizer....most beginner dslr's dont come with that...shoould it be a option i should be loooking for?

i have a d40 and love it but there is a limitation on lenses you can get.

you can only get lenses that have the focusing motor built into the lens (if you want autofocus) which equals a little more money if you start getting into it and want to buy more.

if i'd do it again, i'd either go canon or a midlevel and up nikon like a d90.

i'm jealous of all the cool cheap lenses my buddy with the d300 can use and i can't. of course his camera body wasn't cheap.

don't get me wrong, d40 is an awesome value. it's nice and compact for an slr. pics come out amazing.

for badass reef pics, you'd want a macro lens.

I got the Nikon D40x and a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3. I'm very happy with both . The Panasonic very good pictures for a point and shoot camera. It has a macro feature which allows me to get pretty close to the subject. Couldn't hurt to check out that camera, before you spend the big buck!! I also heard that the Canon Powershot s51s takes good pictures, too. I will be at the frag swag on sunday and I can show you what the camera can do. Good Luck!!
