As you guys know, my pictures are HORRIBLE! lol. I have a sony 12.1 mega pixel digital camera and would like to learn how to take better pictures.

I also got new bulbs that are 14k and the tank looks extremely blue. What modes can I switch it to on the camera to make it come out brighter?

Waiting for an expert to chime in ;)

Not an expert but I believe there should be an exposure setting to make your picture brighter, or you can set to higher ISO setting if you camera has this feature. As for picture being too blue, you can try different white balance settings. Goodluck.

You can start off my checking to see if your camera's White Balance needs to be set. That should address the "blue" issue to some extent. But, IMO, it won't do it sufficiently to enable you to achieve a photo that would be really satisfying in the end. I'd suggest getting a good tripod...turn off the flow in your reef for photo-taking...and if possible, don't use the flash. And, for me, using a good-quality photo-editing software like ACDSee will give the tools needed to really show the actual colors of your subject. There is a learning curve with software like that but I think it's definitely worth it.

Will, can't really say which ISO setting, you just have to test it out. I would first bump up the exposure before messing with ISO. Too high ISO could cause grainy results. Like someone mentioned, sometimes it's easier to edit your picture through a software like ACDSee or photoshop.

Which Sony Camera is it. I want to know the flexibility of the settings. Forget ISO that won't help jack. Just leave it at 800 or 400 so stuff doesn't look grainy.

I think the key for this is making sure your light presets are fine on the camera. Ie. Settings for the lens like incandescent light, sunlight, etc.

The other thing is going to be your exposure. It'll make a big difference. Try your sports mode on the camera and see how it comes out. I used it on my DSC-W2 when I Was too lazy to use my SLR.

Hi Will, its all about the light! and if you deliver my fish on friday, I can explain the "exposure triangle" to you. I learned this from a book by Bryan Peterson titled Understanding Exposure, great book and he made it so easy to understand getting the correct exposure.
