Hey all. I haven’t been active for a very long time as I have not had a reef tank up and running for probably over 10 years. But I just got my son a Coralife smart biocube jr (14g) and have decided to get it up as a small reef. He’s really excited. So just wanted to reintroduce myself. I look forward to posting the setup, and Im sure I’ll have questions since it’s been so long and equipment has changed so much over the years.

Welcome back to the hobby—and what a great way to jump back in, especially with your son! The Coralife Smart BioCube 14g is a solid little all-in-one system, perfect for getting started (or re-started) without being too overwhelming. Plus, it's awesome that you're sharing the experience together.

Since it's been about a decade, you’ll definitely notice some big changes—LED lighting, controller integration, and compact filtration have come a long way. But the fundamentals of reefkeeping still hold strong.

A few tips as you get started:
  • Cycle with patience — even small tanks need a solid foundation.
  • Plan your livestock with size in mind — nano reefs can thrive with softies, zoas, and a couple of small fish.
  • Stay on top of evaporation and top-offs — even a little shift can cause big salinity swings in a 14g.
