can an overflow box be too big for a system? i plan on using a 1600 gph overflow on a 20 gallon tank, this is a freshwater tank with an aquaponic growbed on top that will do period flushes into the fish tank, i want an overflow box that will be be able to handle the large flow from the flushes but am worried about water pressure and if having a big U tube be affected by the size of the tank and periodic but fast flooding

that overflow is going to take up a lot of room. If you can, stickwith a normal filter. Over flow boxes are more trouble than they are worth because of their tnedency of flooding your floor.

Any tank that has a sump... the same could be said. So are you going to now say that he should just do a hang on filter or canister filter to prevent those problems?

If you have a sump large enough to contain whatever water which would have the possibility of overflowing during one of those flushes... I wouldnt see a problem. If you have per say the 20g tank... and a 5g sump... you are asking for problems. But if you used per say a 15g sump it would be avoided.

Because its a freshwater tank that does not need as much of the other equipments ree tanks do, a canister filter would be ideal. If he was to decide to use a sump type filter, it would probably be better for him to have someone drill holes into his tank and fit it with bulkheads than to use an overflow.
