Thats the first prefilter and usually the sediment prefilter. I live in queens and that happens to me too. If you use a smaller prefilter like .5 microns, then I would add another canister like a 5 micron or 1 micron to filter out the larger particles first because they cost cheaper. Thats what I do.

Most of them recommend changing the prefilters after 3 0r 6 months. It depends on what type of filter you have. I"ve also taken my filters out and rinsed them off, and used them for a little more.

I'm in Bath Beach, Brooklyn. If I change filters and the city does water line work in the area I will need a replacement pre-filter in a week due to the amount rust that enters the line. I run all faucets in my house when I change filters and after taking water from my storage tank. If you don't have the storage tank then run the water for a couple of minutes before starting up your RODI unit. This helps clear the line from rust and will give longer intervels between filter changes.

NYC water is heavily sedimented and filters clog more quickly than most places in the US... lucky us.

I'll take my NYC water and its 35-50 TDS tap reading over some of the numbers from the bordering suburbs :skull: Lucky us is right :)

I would galdly take NYC water, over that of the surrounding counties any day. My freind in Nassau, goes trhough his DI cartridge in less than half the time that it takes me.

I just chaged my sediment filter tonight, and can't get it to seal. Keeps spraying water all over the place. Teflon tape?

NO TEFLON TAPE!!

Make sure the o-ring on the filter housing is in place and not damaged.. These are the only thing sealing it, putting excess teflon tape on the housing for a seal will end up cracking the base it is screwed into.

I think NYC water is just heavy on the sediments because I get roughly about 35-40ppm from the tap but it looks so dirty after a month
I used to live upstate in Buffalo, NY and would be able to run the sediment about 6 months and the sediment looks barely used, probably what mine looks like now in about 10 gallons. But Buffalo's water is roughly 150ppm in TDS

Just for an update. When I went back to fiddle with the ro/di, I found that the o-ring had fallen off and rolled under my sink. I never noticed it. That's what you get when you decide to change your sediment filter at 1 am.
