I have a 45gal tank and i have been running it for about 3+ months dont have much in it, few small fishes, 3.. 4.. sps corals live rock, skimmer, i do have a fluval without the foam which might produce extra phosphates, but my problem is that i have a 30 watt power glo fixture that produces bright white light. I do have a few diatoms blooming out when i run it for more than a week for more than 8 hours a day. Is poor lighting a catalyst for nasty cyno blooms?

3 months - still prob. cycling through the algae phases... young tank...

fluval - could be a nitrate factory... clean it out once a week just to be ok....

8 hours a day - shouldnt be a problem.... i wouldnt cut it to much maybe to 6 hours but be careful with the sps there def. not getting alot of the bright light that they need..

by the way how are your sps corals doing with such little lighting...
have u checked all your parimeters out...

ammonia
nitrite
nitrate
phosphates
etc.etc.etc.

wat kind of skimmer, fishies, and sps you got in there

I use seachem reef salt so it really has almost every chemical in it for the corals to survive and thrive and i dont have that many corals for them to use up all the benifitial ingridients.
I got some green neon zooz, few mushrooms and a 4" starburst polyp,1 fan worm and all look very healthy and doing very good open up every day and the strabust polyp is expanding very fast.
Used to have clowns but they for some uknown reason died, may be the #$%ing damsel stressed them out. I cant catch that damn thing. Thats preaty much what i have.

Isn't drperez still running a severely underlit tank? 30 watts over a 45g is barely enough light to make the tank look like it has light. Is 8 hours of light at such a low wattage really going to make his tank go cyano crazy??

SPS under that light shouldn't make it too long :(.

well i dont think i need it cuase i will fine a way to avoid cyno. Actually it looks great. The lamp for now does the job ( not even close) but the specs are this "36 inch, 30w":) It is a plastic factory hood holds 2 lamps but only 1 works.

i must admit i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to filtering systems. My friend wants to know how to clean a canister filter (ehiem) can someone please explain which parts to rinse etc? also he took a sampe of his water to petco for testing and his amonia was high. Can this be attributed to his yellow tang turning pale (whitish)? i thought it was just poor diet so i later gave him 2 clarkii clowns which also starting to lose color what is the most likely cause?
