no ammonia spike in new tank

I added about 160 lb of live rock to my 120g tank last week and still not showing any signs of ammonia increase (in fact I don't see any). I see about 2ppm for nitrite. I posted about my green tank in another thread... i wonder if its somehow related.

Without knowing where and how you get these rocks it's hard to tell what's goingn on.

If the rocks are all from established tank and you transport them properly to your tank including acclimating. There should be minimal die off. Or if your rocks are dry and completely rinsed out of any live, there would be no die off either. So , please elaborate.

Not every tank is going to going through a cycle once you add more rock. Like Wingo said if the rock is from an est tank and fully cured you mayn't have any or very little die off. Also if your tank is est it maybe able to asborb the additional load without a problem.

If your test kits are good they you should be fine. The test is to put some thing in the tank and see how it does.

Just add some carbon ,when the chiller comes in . ill bring up the UV if you need it ,But i think you should wait another week and then test again

What the hell put some fish in right now! Hey with a little nitrex, some cycle and some prime even a few acros and some clams would be fine too right?

First if the LR he put in was from an est tank, and he had very little die off, and his reading where zero then his tank would be ready to go. He could add some of those things without using Nitrex, Cyle or Prime as his tank would have been cycled and been able to handle the load. He would then want to place some thing into his tank, like a hermit crab or fish, and see how it does before moving on to coral and such.

If you place either cured or uncured LR in the tank there isn't a need to place in shrimp or anything else for that matter as the bio-load with be there from the LR.

Ok Ronen that changes everything then. Pikani LR does then to not have a lot of stuff on it so the die off maybe very little.

yup come to think of it ,.it didnt have alot of sponges ,just really nice coralline

It's usally nice stuff but does cost some what more. But I guess some times you get what you pay for.

I never had any spike in my tank either when I added my uncured rock- and it had a TON of life in it... but the rock was shipped in water, and when collected was immediately placed in water- so there was little if any air exposure and the sponges, etc. never died off.

So ammonia still at 0 but Nitrates have gone way up. Time to do some water changes and then add a cleanup crew?? (that's a question

Yes, at this point your tank is cycled and you need to get down your Nitrates. Do a couple of water changes and siphon out any junk on the bottom or on the rocks that you can see. If you have a protein skimmer you should be running it, this will help get the nitrates down also.

Before adding any inverts get the nitrates down, otherwise they maybe die from the high nitrates.
