Yea Chief, use it. I have used it both on my fresh and currently on my saltwater setup. However, you may find some dead pods in the mechanical filtration stage when you're cleaning; but thats expected. Otherwise works pretty good. Ehiem (classic) in my opinion is one of the best canister filters you can buy.

I am only a newbie, but...was thinking if this filtration media is either a calcareous or ceramic media with a highly porous surface area able to provide a vast surface for nitrifying bacteria to colonize and thus cycle (ie. amonia-nitrogen-nitrate)..shouldn't this be avoided(much like bioballs in your sump)...wouldn't it just be a nitrate factory? or am I missing something?

I just looked at the box it looks like coco puffs. It's goin to the freebie thread. Was too lazy to actually read that it was a biological media.

I think it all depends on the balance(ratio) of the contents in the tank and the system. Top 3 inches of sand bed is also a nitrate factory but with proper ratios of things, nitrate is not much an issue. Without any nitrate factory, where would the ammonia go? It will go posion your fish or so. Even the best skimmer cannot remove every organics before they change into ammonia. With more nitrate factories, the ammonia will be nitrified quicker and then you should denitrify it with something like DSB or export the nitrate with macro algae, siphoning the dirt and/or WC.
