I know someone that has two tanks in the same system, one lit by two 250W XM10k, the other with a 6 bulb tek light. I take the SPS corals in the MH lit tank over the T5 tank any day. Same water conditions, similar flow, same photo period, different lights. You can't get any more scientific than that. Some of you have seen his tank pictures on this board.
I haven't seen this tank yet but I hope to soon. I've heard this example from a few other guys on the site also. Unfortunately Sanjay hasn't done studies on t5's but they may or may not be more efficient than MH's in regards to converting watts (electricity) into par (light). Regardless, you guys are comparing 720W of light (2 250W bulbs + 2 110W VHOs) to 324W of light (6 54W bulbs). The nice t5 tanks I'm thinking about usually have a lot more bulbs. I have an 8 bulb tek fixture on my 2' tank and still don't think its enough. If my tank ever gets to the point of you guys, as far as corals, I'll probably attach a couple of endcaps on the back of the fixture to get a few more bulbs in.

I like t5's because I feel it gives a more uniform light, more bulb variations and stays cooler. But in the end, light is light.
