I?m thinking about upgrading to a bigger tank without the hassle of a sump. What are the benefits to having a sump besides extra water volume, holds equipment and filtration? Currently I have a 55g with a 15g sump. Now if I upgrade to a sumpless 75g I will have more water volume, the rocks from the sump will be moved to the display, the skimmer is a HOB and I will add an extra powerhead. Is there any reason not to go sumpless?

Right now I'm running a Remora Pro. And the only thing in my sump is rocks and the return pump. Plus I have a built in overflow which takes up a lot of space in a standard (narrow) 55g.

What kind of skimmer are you planning for the 75g. I think the biggest plus is not having to crowd your tank with equpiment.

maybe I will use a sump. I like how the water level in my display stays constant. I have to think about it.

What do you mean about water level being constant, I've been sumpless for almost 2 years, never noticed any difference in water level.
btw my float switch is in the display tank (that gives you an idea how regualr the water level is).

Without a float switch in the main tank you would see what he means. When you have a sump the water line in the display never changes but the water line in the sump does.

Without the float switch or a sump the water line in the main tank would go lower with evap. If you have a FW tank without a float switch you'd see lol.

I don't have a auto top off system. I'm paranoid of flooding my apartment.

What size tank do you have?

Ooh, I thought he meant that sumpless tanks didn't have a constant waterline.

Also 5g ATO using 2 float switch design (getto design)
Haven't had a flood since I started using it.

macro algae brick is the main reason, this is where your nitrites go also unwanted critters like if you have harlye shrimp you keep food supply in the sump
