any ideas on how to silence an air inlet on a skimmer? air enters thru a valve, down some tube into pump. ive tried a plastic cone thing stuffed with cotton, but it seemed only to amplify the noise. looking for something like i saw on the bremuda aquatic skimmers.
any idea, with pics
thanks
without an air pump the skimmer would be sucking air thru the valuve, right? thats where u get the sound. What i was saying was adding an airpump and put the tubing into the valvue so ur forcing air in, and it would stop the sound. That was always my understand, i guess i'm wrong
it makes sense, and i think it would solve the problem, but then air pumps are pretty loud(at least cheap ones) and its just another piece of equip to plug in. it can work but i think its too complicated, there has to be a simpler solution.
See if you can get a silencer from Bermuda or another company that sells them. Shouldnt be too much, I'm using one of the silencers from Bermuda, doesn't really make it completely silent but it does help to some extent.
WHat kind of skimmer are you using? I can't believe that your tank is quiet enough to single out any one noise! I think you're doing something wrong. My tank is a loud:
Hummmmmm
GUrggggggle
Slushhhhhhhh
a euro reef cs80. aside from falling water its a very dominant noise. i have my sump next to my tank under a small table, so its open, well yours is too. i guess if it was in a stand it wouldnt be a problem.
it seems like everthing i try to put on just makes the noise louder.
Get a crappy pump or redo yoru plumbing but instead of measuring this time just "eyeball" everything. You're bound to create some very loud "water sounds" which will drown out the air sucking noise!
Seriously um how about getting larger diameter tube and placing it over your tube. Same idea as with PVC. By having the air go through a larger pipe it will make less noise. By the time it gets to the narrower diameter it will make the same noise but by the time it gets there it'll be 10" deep inside tube.
Mike silencer is easy - get two 1/2 end caps (flat ones verses rounded) and a 1/2 length of PVC. You need about 4" on the PVC and a hole in one end cap large enough for the air tube from the venturi. Put the hose into the cap, insert the PVC pipe and pull it through so it's not getting closed when you put the last cap on. ONce you put the cap on you're done
The silencing part is done - when you drill the larger hole for the airline tube, do it dead center of the cap, then with a really small bit, drill a sequence of smaller holes around it for the air to go in.
