Alkalinity dropping

Why is it that alkalinity drops? Seems its common problem for most tanks hence dosing and kalkwasser. Noone's figured anything else out?

I know low alk will lower calcium but is there any other impact?

Alk and calcium will both lower if you don't keep them up with dosing or reactor. Both are consumed by calcareous organisms.
