Beach Sand?

to be honest, i am sort of a newbie myself and let me say if you cant afford sand then what are you going to with the rest of the things you gonna need for a reef tank.
i would rather buy sand from home depot than use sand from the beach especially from our "wonderful" new york beaches,

but yeah get a bag of aragonite, belive me the 10 dollars you spend today will save you hundreds in the future, thats how i look at things.

dude as everyone has said be smart and just go buy a bag of sand from petland its like 16$ and comes i think 20lbs bag.. its also a nice pink aragonite... dont waste ur time with the polluted nyc beach sand... i personally would take the great advice given by people who took time to offer you a suggestion....

Worse comes to worse, you are better off going to Home Depot/Lowes, and check their playground sand. It is normally steamed cleaned, and it is better than beach sand, even if it is from a nice beach in the Jersey shore. You can see if the sand from HD is aragonite based, that will give you a leg up over beach sand.
Don't take our advice if you feel you can do it, but definitely check other sites in the internet and see what they say. This hobby definitely is one where you can't skimp much on cost.

ok im convinced ill get me new sand, i just wanted to see all the pros and cons of beach sand. ill dump the sand tomorrow and get me some new sand thanks for all the opinion guys.

sand is real cheap. You can get it for a dollar/lb, it wont be alive thou- just ask a fellow member for a scoop of their sand.

if you start off cheap, its only gonna get you down the line
