This is a bit of a longshot, but it's worth a try.

Every now and then I hear a clicking sound from my tank. It sounds like two stones smashing into each other and happens very very randomly. I thought perhaps it was a snail slamming against the glass, but today I was staring intensly at my tank and heardthe loud click. I couldnt find anything that would make that sound. So are there any hitchikers that click?

I've had a few snail deaths over the months, but nothing major. I think some hermits are the culprit.

I havent seen any smashed shells and none of my fish are missing or injured.

I heard the same thing a while back when I started my tank- and hoped that it was a pistol shrimp!

Nope- it was a mantis...I never noticed it in my 16g for about 6+ months- they hide pretty well and the only thing I noticed was the clicking sound and some hermit deaths. I would maybe get a trap and see if you can get whatever it is- if its a pistol keep it, mantis give it away on here if you can get it alive!

Could the mantis shrimp be very very small?
Or do they mature pretty fast...

I used to hear random clicking sounds, found it was my floating thermometer hitting walls and powerheads...

The lil bugger looks like this... it's a pistol or else he would've eaten my hand last night!

Probably a mantis or a pistol but just in case...do you have any damsels? Some damsels (like the domino for ex.) will make an occasional clicking sound.

Does your tank have sand? I use to have a pistol shrimp...made real loud clicking noises (i.e. sound of tank crack). If you have sand, it would bury themselves in it. I use to hold a piece of krill (via tongs) and intentionally lure it out for feeding. Maybe you can try that out. It'll pick up the scent.
