hey guys I have a problem with my temp in my 90 gal. the temp flucuates(sp) alot normally its ablout 78 degrees but if i dont look at the temp in a day or two sometimes it jumps up alot. I saw it at 84 yesterday so I opened my hood and put a fan on the tank. Is there anything I can do to keep the temp constant??? so far all the fish seem fine but I dont want anything to happen to my little friends. any help I would appreciate thanks.

do you have fans installed in the hood i am assuming that you have mh,iguess your best bet is to install fans in the hood to keep the temp down hope that works.

Temps usually rise like that when the halides go on in an enclosed hood. You have mentioned having a fan. Currently I am using the reefkeeper 2, of which there is currently a group buy. Iset it to turn on the fan at a preset temperature. Works great. For the summer months be on the safe side and have a chiller set up in the same way.

There are quite a few temp controllers out there. I have had my share of them and unfortuntely most of them have a tendency to fail or be off by a few degrees after a while. Good ones with a proven trackrecord are Ranco controllers or Medusa. They come in either single or dual versions.

Currently I am using the RK2. So far so good, but its only been a couple of months.

at the very least set up a temp controller to turn fans on in the hood.

I am going to set up my light with a safety that will shut them down if the tank temp gets too high.

That's 90% of your problem right there. You should have said so sooner!

To boot you should get less salt creep too.

The top and the bottom!>?

As in take a temp reading in the upper 4 inches of your aquarium and then take another reading in the bottom 4 inches of you tank. If you can take reading in more than one area in the top and bottom. If will give you a better average.
Your water temp might vary slightly in you tnak between the top and bottom obviously with the top being slightly warmer. If it is constant then that would usually indicate very good flow and mixing of different parts of the water column.

i did measured the top and bottom and they are the same. but without the glass tops the temp dropped down to 80. Is that still a little high????

Hold on gonna give you a good link to tank temp ranges in a reef tank
