Hey,
i was just wondering if there are some detritus eaters that are better than others. Also, what are the more exotic looking ones? I have a 55 that i plan on adding some LPS and maybe some SPS to it. The tank is only a few months old so i dont think im going to add any sea stars to it. But other than that do you guys have any suggestions?

Harif,

There are a lot of detritus eaters out there. Unfortunately many of the more attractive ones are not necessarily appropriate for all systems. You can try some of the more attractive hermits (zebra, etc) but remember some can get aggressive to snails and certain corals, certain shrimp are also good but neither necessarily digs on detritus.

Overall I would obtain detritus eaters on the basis of appropriateness, as opposed to appearance. Check the various mollusc species. As a final word, be careful of pretty cucumbers, as they tend to be poisonous.

Another thing; is it true that sea stars (even small ones)should only be left to tanks with larger volumes? Sorry im a newb when it comes to SW inverts.

i have a serpent star that is about 7 to 8" across in my 29gal and the tank is only 30" across and 18" wide.my star likes to hide under rock.so if you do decide to get one make sure its reef safe being that i noticed you posted something about keeping corals.

Stars diets vary by type. Many are algae/film eaters that we really don't know what it is that sustains them (Linckia's for instance). Other stars, like brittle stars can be carnivorous and eat small fish. Sand sifting stars will munch on detritus.
