Have a 29g tank and I want to set up a 10g sump. The sump will have a skimmer and small refugium. Any ideas and preferably pics of how I can set it up. Some prev. skimmer threads have been some help. Another prob I was thinking about was mixing the water from the sump and the main tank any thoughts on this I was going to do a water change and take that water to fill my sump.:iamwithst

I'm not sure what you mean by mixing the water from the sump. Do you mean how should you do the plumbing?

Also, depending on the size of your skimmer, 10 gallon is pretty small for a sump / fuge. This is Lissa's tank, which is the exact setup you're talking about... hope it helps. Let me know if I can help you with any questions.

That setup looks just like mine, but my tank is not drilled. I just want to see how the skimmer compartment overflows into any other compartments, I would like to have my overflow go directly into my skimmer compartment then into a small fuge then back up to the main tank. As for mixing water I was just worried about having a different water chemistry mix w/ my tank water... of course Ill try to get the params as close as possible but Im worried about freaking out my fish, my small amount of corals but mostly going through another possible algae bloom. NIce job on the tank btw!!!

Still a little confused... if you have a constant flow draining from the main tank and returning to the display the water will have the same parameters in the sump as the water is constantly moving through both.

the purpose of water changes is to remove nitrates and excess waste/impurities from the tank. Putting the water change water into the fuge does no good, your still going to have to add fresh saltwater into the main display. so adding it to your fuge would do the same amount of work for you. Adding 10g into the tank setup (29g tank +fuge) is like doing a large water change. Should be ok.

I'm planning on adding 20 gallons + ontop of my 24 gallons when i do my tank change and everyone has been saying i won't see a mini cycle or disturbance in the coral. so.

Scarf I was thinking of your setup exactly, U like the 3 holed part from the first chamber or would u recommend something different. I was thinking about a J Tube. Less noise would be the most important.

i really like that sump set up but it's up to you. my ninety made so much noise in my room that the 3 hole thing was probably the most silent part. i've learned tricks to keep everything silent.

if your sump will be covered up then there's no need to worry about the three hole wall. i think the skimmer makes more noise.

you know what you just gave me a great idea. i'm gonna put elbows w/ pvc in the holes so when they drain it will be below water level and more silent .
