I can hear some noise from the vibration of my pump in the sump. What's the best way to quiet this? Is there a specific type of foam or rubber that I can put under the pump? Could I even go super cheap and put a few rubber bands around it? not sure if this would be reef safe

rubber bands are reef safe but i don't think that will help much. if the pump is making contact w/ the sump bottom then you can place a sponge under the pump, but be sure to clean the sponge often. i also know of fellow reefers who use mouse pads in their tank w/ no problem, you can place one under the pump and see if that helps any

Neoprene works well, same material as wetsuit. My brother-in-law works for a company called builtny that makes neoprene bags. I used one of them. Cut it up and placed it under the pump. works great. You can get one of these bags pretty cheap at bed bath & beyond, linen n things and stores like that.

you can buy silicon rubber mats from Mcmaster I think i saw someone on this board who had used them for exactly what you talking about
here's the link http://www.mcmaster.com/
I use a mouse mat (which is neoprene rubber/ wetsuit material)and it works fine

I killed my yellow tang with mouse pad yesterday, saw this thread and got some mouse pad at staples, socked them for a long time, looked like neoprene, looked and smell ok, put them in my sump, next day all the fish were guiling (no idea of the spelling) and polyps closing, removed quickly all mouse pads, aerate my water, did a massive water change, my yellow tang didn't make it.
Today everything is back to normal fortunately, I'm back with my 3 noisy pumps.
