hi everyone...my name is christine and i am just getting started in this hobby. i purchased and set up a 24G AquaPod on thursday (distilled water, dry sand, switched out the pump for a MJ1200, planning on tossing the filter media and adding chemi-pure, phosban and chaeto once i add my LR). i went to purchase my LR today, but since i was having some trouble with my hydrometer (instant ocean by marineland) i had taken some tank water with me to double check the specific gravity...it's way low, and my hydrometer is way off. added some more salt today, looking into refractometers, and will go back tomorrow to have it retested.

i live on LI (roslyn) and have been using aquarium adventure. any other suggestions for good stores in the area? any other suggestions?

looking forward to getting to know you all!

thanks for the welcome. pics will come soon...not much to see yet lol. hopefully i'll get this salt thing under control and put some LR in there soon. does anyone know where (LI, queens, NYC area) where I can purchase a refractometer? i know i can order one online, but i'd love to be able to pick one up tomorrow and get going before the work week starts.

OT: qckwzrd, adorable glider! what's his/her name and age? my little asi is still just a baby (i've only had her for a month). do you feed a BML diet or something else?

Welcome to MR. Like Tony said, there are a lot of experienced aquarists on this board that truly enjoy sharing their wisdom. Ask questions, use the search feature and take it all in ;) .

Calibrating a swing arm hydrometer is only effective if you can guaranty no air bubbles on the swing arm and temperature is always the same as the calibration temp.

You're on the right track with getting a refractometer. If you can't find one locally, I know we have members in LI that would be happy to test your water with their refractometer. Then you can order one online.

Welcome to MR Christine, this is a great place for everyone. There are a few of us Nano Reefers here (12G Aquapod), one thing you will be reminded is that in our hobby patience is a virtue. I hope you can fix your salt issue.
