hitchhiker snail question

my girlfriend swears she saw a snail hitchhiker on a piece of LR yesterday. I haven't seen it, and it was not in the place she saw it today. She said it looked like a white slimy blob kind of thing (yeah, that's helpful..would have been more helpful if she grabbed the camera!) if it is in fact in my tank, it's shell-less...is that ok or do i need to toss a shell in there? are they like hermit crabs in that they move into new shells?

probably a stomella. snails don't need other shells. they grow w/ the shell unlike hermits
