I have seen prices for live rock anywhere between $4-$10/ lb, depending on the store, depending on the quality, depending on how cured it is. Probably Fishtown is the cheapest....but its not always attractive. That said, if your conditions are good, live rock colors up quickly enough...and what seems like good rock can be full of Aiptasia....got some like that at Northern Pets a few years ago. Take care, Eric

hey fish town has some decent live rock at decent prices too .....i got some of my rock from them an never got a problem

I go to fish town pretty often lately specially when I can't wait to set up a reef tank.

But those rocks look yellow and lifeless.. I'm new to SW, but I've seen some decent LRs on the internet. I can tell the difference I think.

Look at www.reefermadness.us they have 7 types of rock and will sell in quantities from 20 pounds and up. They have beautiful rock as well. If you get some of the light weight rock, you won't need as much, and it will leave room for fish to swim. Just a suggestion.

P.S. You can also check with Phishybusiness.com. Their Bali Ultra is some of the nicest rock I have ever seen.

Guys,

I visited H2O yesterday (Sat) and the fish store looks under a good management in terms of nice and clean fish tank layouts. Everything is organized. I would say it looks better than fish town.

However the LRs are $6.99/LB and rocks have no colors or any croaline imo. But the water is cyrstal clean in the tank.

My question is do any LRs will start grow colorful corals n algae once it is in a well maintained tank for a while?

Here is my thought. I don't need to buy the LRs that show coralines or colors while they are in dealer's tank. I can just buy some plain ones and bring them home. Would they start to show color and start grow things under good maintainence?

If so, does it apply to ALL LRs? or just to Fiji or some well known types?

Thanks

H20's liverock is actually pretty decent rock. Once your tank matures, your rock will take on more color and organisms will start appearing more frequently. What you don't want is detrimental algae or parasites on your rock which may appear on cheaper, poorly maintained live rock.

Is there an obvious way that you can tell whether or not a piece of LR has been fully cured by looking at it?

Would there be any visual signs on the rock to confirm it is fully cured or not?

There is also a pet store on 48th street close to northern boulevard beside the national wholesale liquidators i think its a petland they sell fully cured LR I picked up about 15 lbs last year had no problems with it although I wouldnt buy any livestock there. When I bought it was on sale went in there today and they where selling for $7 a lb.
I also bought some rock that i am currently curing from marcorocks.com he sells it dry so you get value for money and shipping is reasonable as well.

Ask to pick up a piece and smell it...if it stinks, its not fully cured. Lighting over live rock tanks is usually not great, but it should be enough to see the rock clearly. Watch it for a while, be patient. Be on the lookout for Aiptasia and Valonia....red or green slime is so obvious that I'm sure you wouldn't even bother to consider the rock in that case. If it looks clean and smells good, go for it if you like it, even if there is no coralline. If your tank is healthy and has lots of coralline already, it will color up in a few weeks. Take care, Eric

Hi everyone,

I have been searching for LR on the internet and in the for sale section on this board.

Most of the vendors sell their LR per box (usually 50lb+). I have a 20g tank and probably 20lbs of LR is enough for it. So I am considering buy LR from my LFS.

There are three FSs in my area.
1. Fish Town USA
2. Northern Blvd Pet Store on Northern and Prince st
3. Main street Pet store

I've seen the LRs these three stores carry and I'm not very confident about the quality of the rock.

Can anyone give me some feedbacks on these three stores? in terms of quality of the product and professionalism of the business?

Thanks

If you not in too much of a hurry, I will be placing an order for LR in about two weeks. I could order extra for you, it's up to you. I say two weeks, because I don't have a setup at this time, still getting equipment together. I'll have water in my tank in about a week.

If Brooklyn is not too far for you, you can come visit me, I sell fully cured rocks at $5/lb and you got to pick for yourself. I have about three four hundred pounds in stock.

I am in the process of moving and rebuilding the new showroom, so not sure will the rocks be on 7th Avenue or 17th Avenue by the time you visit.

Page me for details.

Hi Eric,

I thought I should pick the LRs that have green or red stuff on it. Something colorful, no? I got all confused..

So what does it mean when people say " LRs will color up in a few weeks in a well maintained tank"? What does it mean by "Color up"?
Is there going to be the GOOD color and the BAD color? what is that?

Thanks

I meant that in a healthy tank, which has coralline already, it will rapidly begin to grow on the new rock. I guess that it wouldn't be too rapid in a new tank, and , yes, the most desirable rock will already have plenty of coralline on it..it will also sell the fastest of the rock in the tank. If you inspect the rocks carefully, you should be able to find some small patches here and there. Facing the light in your tank, these patches will grow out to colonize the rock. Do you know anyone who has a well established tank? You may be able to get scrapings of coralline of the glass and add it to your tank. But overall, you must be patient....a good reef tank is years in the making. At this point, anything that is in my tank for more than a week already gets pink and crusty...I've even seen giant Valonia get completely crusted over. Take care, Eric
