There was a study a couple of years ago that showed that Instant Ocean was overall the best brand of salt..yes, it showed that Coralife was one of the worst. In my first few years of salt water, I experimented with several types of salt, including Coralife, IO, and Reef Crystals...others I forget. I have always found IO to work perfectly well for me, and have stuck with it exclusively for the last 5-6 years. Its not as cheap as it used to be...their 200 gal bucket is now a 160 gal bucket...shipping will never go down..but its still probably cheaper than the others...well, there are some real cheap brands, mostly the type used in lobster tanks. Take care, Eric

It never pays to listen to an LFS when you are first setting up, unless you happen to have one that you really trust. Most LFS's will push whatever stuff they can make the most profit on, from whichever companies give them the best deals....not necessarily the best companies. Sometimes they may sell good products...but are just too rigid to sell certain brands or products. Forums like this are the best for getting the best range of info, even if at times everyone may seem to contradict each other...when you know enough to make a good decision, then you order the stuff you need on-line. Or in an emmergency, you will know what to buy when you go to the store. Salt is something you have to buy from an LSF with an established reputation for salt water....if you run out and go to your local Petland, you may end up with a bag of IO that has been sitting in the shop for months, getting all caked, with screwed up akalinity....Take care, Eric
