I've purchased this ETSS Reef devil skimmer and sort of having a hard time setting it up. Is there a specific water pump I need to use or what would be the best.

I have a 55 gallon tank with a a wet/dry sump underneath. Im currently using a Rio 2100 pump as my return from the sump. When I hooked up my Protein skimmer to the pump the water started to over flow through the cup on top. Is it possible that I need to place the skimmer at a higher location. I tried viewing the manual for the ETSS site but the instructions wasn't that clear.

Im not sure what the GPS is set to but when I had it connected to the skimmer the water wasn't pushing hard enough to push the water back out through the return back to the tank.

you put on an attachment to the outlet of the skimmer...that reduced the amount of water that can leave, a standard reef devil has a 1inch outlet which is 600gph.....can you remove the hose barb attachment?

The problem is that the pump should be hooked up to where the hose is hanging. you have to remove that barb which is causing back pressure. My old one had a 1" 90 degree elbow facing up which is where you would you can put a filter sponge that they sell at the super skimmer web site. the skimmer should look like this.

This is there website.

there should be nothing off that vavle.. use the valve to control the flow ..
you can also put an elbow on the end of that vavle if you need it..

the new one have the gate valve facing up. yours is straight so just remove the reducer and the barb, and connect a 90 degree elbow, and if you want to attach a sponge add a 1 1/2 piece of pvc and when you buy the sponge just place it over the 1 1/2" pvc

Ok I have the same skimmer It will take up to 2 week to adjust to your tank.. Best place to start it have the water level come to the bottom of the sticker and leave it alone... Only small turns 1/4 turns to adjust after you start foaming up-, water level should never be past the sticker, Good Luck and Have Patience
I have my skimmer in my sump proped up on a stand so the the gate valve is above the water level, I have the rio pump still on it from day 1, Make sure you clean the little barb fitting on air outlet as salt creep will build up and affect the skimmers pump output...U need to have this skimmer above water line to skim good, atleast for me .. Get rid of the restiction on that gate valve ( ie barb fitting )

ok same thing as dace said cause i have his old one. it has the mag 7 on it and doesnt have the barb, thats creating back pressure in the skimmer hence super wet and overflowing with water. mine isnt running yet, still in process of putting everything together, but i will have mine at a slight angle so the water flows out into refugium part of sumo

Thanks everyone, I see what I was doing wrong. I was trying to use the valve to hook up a hose as my return back to the display tank. But now seeing the pictures you showed and the link I see it can't be done.

The same thing happened to me..... I had to cut the clear rised tube off the skimmer at its base. I then got a strap wrench http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Hand+Tools%2C+General+Purpose&pid=00945533000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Adjustable+Wrenches&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes
Fished it into the skimmer and around the bulkhead nut. The I was able to reattach bulkhead.
When that was all done you have to clean up the top of the skimmer where the riser was cut off and reattch the riser using weldon and caulk. I actually bought a new riser tube from the manufacturer.

That wasn't too bad. Its all attached back in now. All I have to do is seal up the clear tube riser. You said to use caulk can I use the silicone I 100% silicone rubber sealant clear?
