How do you determine the appropriate height for the first baffle in a sump separating the skimmer from the fuge?

I'm going to take a stab at making my own sump from an old tank before I shell out the big bucks for something custom.

Thanks!

you can knock the sharp edges off cut glass with a bit of sandpaper.
Just make sure you have something between your hand and the sandpaper incase the glass cuts through.

The baffles + 1/2 inch or so is max where the water should be at when the system is running. Just make sure that you have enough room over that mark to allow for drain water filling up into the sump when you turn the pump off. Usually its 3-5 gallons depending on tank size. Which usually is determined by overflow water above your drain and the amount of water in the plumbing going back down into the sump.

Melves page doesn't explain the height of the baffles well. But it does give a great write up on explaining everything else

I am a little daft...I still totally don't know how high to make them 'cause I'm not sure how to calculate any of the variables.
