as duke said WASTE water thats not intended for your tank.you can brush your teeth with it but a no-no for the tank,i believe it will be the same as adding tap water.

it'll be water filtered through your sediment and carbon filters on your unit but not through your R/O membrane or DI resin Making the TDS unacceptable for use as tank water. You can buy a permeate pump that makes your unit more efficient by passing some of the waste water (which is better than your initial water source) back through your unit giving you less total waste water. you'll always have waste water thats not good enough for your tank.

here are some threads that came up on "permeate pump" search. I'm not sure if they explain anything and if so how much but it's probably a good read. Search engine works great

If you don't want to waste the waste water, you can run the waste line to your washing machine and use it there. You can water plants with it, store it in a bucket, put a hose in it and use it with a pressure washer. Use your imagination and that's all you're limited by. Just don't put it into your tank ;)

To the original question -

Waste water gets a bad rap - it might better be thought of as "flush water."

It is the "flush water" that constantly is flushed across (rather than through) the semi-permeable membrane layer in what the multilayer TFC membranes we all use. This water carries away the materials that would otherwise clog the membranes.
