phosban dust

hey everyone,
Today i bought a phosban reactor with some phosban at NERAC (wich was great!!!) anyway......i put the phosban in, did every thing the directions said and added a cup of saltwater i noticed the water was very cloudy like the color of the phosban what should i do b4 putting it on my tank?

I've done this a few times:duh: I did have a problem with some zoos (not even sure if was from phosban) but everyhting else was fine.

i thought i cleaned it good then i realized the flow was too low so wen i rose it it kicked up more dust....

is the dust bad?

o man i have zoos there open now.....i'll keep an eye on em

Do you have fish? Its more harmful to fish than coral. I would lightly dust the corals or even try to siphon out what can be seen. If the dust lands on coral tissue it will irritate it, proly the reason jacksons zoas were affected. Dusting off the polyps will help. Try to get some type of filter that can polish the water quick like a canister or hang over with some carbon and filter floss. Make sure to rinse off the carbon first too!

When I first got my Phosban reactor, read the instructions and did a seach on the site for more info, I decided to pre-rinse my Phosban thoroughly before using.

I put the proper amount into a small clean tupperware bowl and added fresh SW, gently swished it around and then poured off the discolored water. I did this a few times, until it ran clear. It didn't take 5 minutes & I had extra peace of mind! Then I added it to my reactor and hooked it up.

As per the instructions included with the reactor, I then drained the first gallon or so that ran through the reactor into a bucket & discarded. (there was a bit more of the orange residue left from jostling the phosban when loading the reactor).

when i got home today the tank was clear once again and my fish and coral were fine i guess i'm lucky

George, glad everything worked out fine for you. The information given here is right on the money. Make sure to get yourself a phosphate test kit or monitor (monitors are expensive though) and test your water. This way you'll know when the phosban is used up and needs replacing.

George a cleanup crew will always be helpful. They provide various functions in a reef tank. Hopefully they'll attack nuisance algae, stir your sandbed, make a quick meal of the unfortunate fish that might perish and provide some nice biodiversity.
