Although it may be beneficial to dim them, I don't think it's necessary. I have my halide on a timer and when it goes off, it goes off. I don't use any supplementation, so I have only the halides.

I am not aware of to many people dimming their ligths before turning them off. I don't even know that it is possible with many of the types of lighting that are used.

Many people do have multiple lights over their system, with the on and off times staggered. I guess this does give a somewhat dimming effect, but I don't know to what extent it is necessary.

how important is it for corals that you dim your lights before you turn them off ? can i just click them off?

I dont think its necessary to dim lights for corals, but I do use three types of lighting on my tank for effect.

Actinics 8-10am, 6-8pm
MH 10-6pm
LEDs 8am-8pm

One time I shut the moonlights off and my clowns freaked :) I guess they are used to their little moonlight at night.

dont mean to intrude on this thread... but if your lights are off in the tank and you come home late one night and turn on your room light. does this affect corals in any way due to light cycle?
