I feed both and my fish like them equally, but the pellets sink quickly, so if your fish don't get them right away they can end up in the bottom of the tank. With an auto feeder, you may want to try flakes and a feeding ring so that they don't get sucked into the overflow.

Duke,

How long you going away and what's your address?:kidding:

But realize you just announced to the world you're leaving your home unattended.

Why don't you get father in law to check in on the tank? Get him more interested in the hobby?

cut a piece of material that floats ( packing foam) in shape of window, & position it so the autofeeder drops it in the hole, the flakes will float but will evntually get soaked allowing enough time for fish to feed.
this is what I have minus the autofeeder...you get the idea
back to topic: small fish is good with flakes, I think pelletes have better nutri value.

Completely agree with Dean. My fishes were eating flakes. For the last 1 month I was feeding frozen food and all of my fishes stopped eating flakes. :(
I fed flakes a week back and they never bothered to touch flakes.

 You better start now! You don't want to find out the night you leave, that your fish don't eat flakes/pellets.

I agree with everyone, I feed my guys a combination of frozen cubes, and pellets, alternating in different days. Just like any other animal they tend to get used to the conditioning of a certain kind of food. If you vary it they will start to become opportunistic feeders. The pellets that I use are the Hikari small pellets, my fish seem to like it. And if you are going to be gone for a long time, definitely consider all the previous suggestions. Auto topoff, food conditioning, get a timer for your lights. I love my tank, but extended vacations are pretty much out of the question, unless I get someone to come watch the tank (hopefully someone that will know what to do) ZBest of luck
