Hey everyone,

I had a question. I'm looking into filtration at this point, and I was wondering what everyone thought of the seaclone protein skimmers. I found a decent deal on one. I think its the SCPS100. I'm gonna be setting it up on a fish only tank. Its a 33 gallon long (48x12x12).

Thanks.

See what you can afford....the Seaclone isn't a very good skimmer, but its not that bad. It does take frequent adjustments, and the airline needs to be cleaned of salt buildup every week or so, but when it skims well, it produces a very dark, concentrated foam. Its definitely better than nothing....whatever you do, don't get a Prizm...that might be worse than nothing. Take care, Eric

It makes a good DIY reactor for carbon... otherwise, maybe a javelin... but not so good as a skimmer. I had on my 33g, I modded it with an airvalve and a bioball and it almost worked. You can probably find a better deal on a used Remora here than a new Seaclone and it's a much better skimmer.

save your money and get a better, user friendly, more reliable skimmer. I would have done so if I could do it all over again. It's not worth the money you save to deal with it. I still have it, and it's close to maybe working at 90% but it requires a lot of attention until u get it to work properly. if you ultimately have to get one, there are a few things you could do to make it work some what better.

otherwise stay away from the sea clown

Seaclones must have great marketing or something. It seems that most of use have crossed paths with the infamous seaclone protein skimmer. As others said, don't waste your $$

Its probably a combination of marketing and low prices which attract a lot of users. I too once owned a seaclone when I started this hobby, and it definately wasn't worth it.

In fact, any user who claims seaclones are good has probably never owned a) any other brand or b) anything that actually cost more

thanks for all the responses. so, seaclone out. I saw remora and urchin as a suggestion. any others? I'm probably willing to spend about $100 as long as its a real good skimmer that doesn't require to much maintenance. Is that the price range I should be looking at or will it be much more expensive then that? I don't mind buying used as long as everything works well.

Seaclone is absolute trash and so is the prism from red sea. If you are looking to skim that tank Urchin or remora would be ok, Remember you get what you pay for.

Read the skimmer thread. There were a few remora's and urchins for sale in the for sale forum as well, don't know if they all sold yet.

Nothing in this hobby that is cheap requires little maintenance. Cheap skimmers lead to more maintenance on the tank itself.
You should be looking at more expensive or a great deal in the FS/FT Forum.
As Brendan said, you get what you pay for.

ok, no jebo. I think im gonna try out the mr community first for a skimmer and if I cant find anything then go to ebay. I just had a real good experience buying some lighting from richiewwhite in LI. Very cheap, very nice guy.

Jebo sucks
A used quality item is far superior then a new crappy item
Please dont expect to pay $100 for a new skimmer and expect it to perform very good.

If you can wait about a month, I'd sell my ASM G3 skimmer for $150 after I upgrade. You would need a sump though

FYI, the urchin and remora are basically the same skimmer. The remora is a hang on and the urchin is the in sump model.

Saying you're only willing to spend $100 on a skimmer is like saying you're only willing to spend $500 on a car. It can be done, but expect to put a LOT more work in to the tank / car, and no road trips!
