Has anyone had experience with a Prizim protein skimmer?

Can it be succesfully used on a 55 reef tank w/70lbs LR and 50lbs of LS.

I only expect to have a scooter blennie, 1 horned blennie, 1 yellow tang and a clown. Janitors will be 50 red legged hermits, 24 zebra hermits, about a hundred assorted snails and a serpent star.

The Prizm skimmer is a good skimming choice. I'm not sure for a tank that size, but there's always the Prizm Pro.

Sorry to get off topic, but it sounds like you might have a cleanup crew thar's a little large for your tank! I say 20 hermits and 15 snails and serpent star should be about right, more for a reef tank in every category by about 5, except for the star.

Thanks fishfanatic2

I was planning on a Pro model, sorry I didn't mention that.

It's going to be a reef tank. That's the only way to go!

I'll cut back on the critters. I thought that might be a high number. Got the numbers from my LFS. As you can see i'm going to need all the help I can get. :)

The Pro would definatey work. I am running the regular model on my 60gal. However I do not have a large fish load.

I would even think about going all snails. It never fails, hermits like shells. I even put little shells in for growth & the varmints still kill astrea snails for their shells. They behave just like terrestrial hermits, shell feeling is their hobby. Sometimes you have to pull out a snail to see what his shell feels like on the inside.

How can you say the prizm is a good skimmer? That thing is a pile, get a euroreef and you will want nothing else. Infact I dislike almost every red sea product. If you dont have the money for euro or need a hang on get an aquac remora. When you see what comes out of a quality skimmer I think you will be suprised...

I really hope you dont waist your money on that prizm,

I curently have a Prizm Deluxe Model on a 15 gal. tank. I am ready throw it out the window. I can't keep it regulated. The skimmer attachment that came with it is to diffisult to maintain. The slightest amount in water drop and the cup empty's and you have to get it started again. Then there is the water overflows. It has overflowed on numerous occasions. I will be buying an Aquac Remora as soon as I can get the money together. My suggestion is to stay away from Red Sea products.

The difference between the standard model and the pro is like the difference between a bicycle and a BMW

I have had a Pro for 2 years and its rated for a 300g tank, runs silent, has ample yet dry foam, and rarely needs adjusting....and is about 3x to 4x the price.

Ok......I have used the Red Sea Prizm and it sucks. To noisy, difficult to adjust, and the motor died within about 9 months. I will not buy anytthing now that has a Rio Pump.like the Prizm's. The seaclone uses a Maxi-jet.I now have had a Seaclone 150 that is quiet, easy to maintain, easy to clean, inexpensive, and draws out adequate amounts of gunk. I have had it for about 2 years now. My water is perfect. You must keep an eye on the air hose and make sure it is not plugged. I found salt cloggin mine and when I removed that piece of the hose....it ran very well. It was enough to change my view about using these. Just call me Kerry? My views are changing as have more experience in this costly hobby. Now I may one day get enough money to try out an Aqua C Skimmer someday...but with my budget the Seaclone is just fine. Keep in mind that these are not the same Seaclones made prior to 2002. Most skimmers are way overpriced in my opinion. I realize that there are skimmers out there that create finer bubbles and longer exposure time but how much is actually required. This will be proprtionate to the bioload of your tank. My tank is not overly stocked. Perhaps if I had a larger biolaod my skimmer would not keep up with it.

Hi fuelman

Please, plan on putting the green serpent star in his own tank. He loves the little fishes, especially on a Ritz cracker!! We lost an entire school ...6 each...of Green Chromis to the one we have, its 18" across, the disk is about the size of the bottom of a tea cup and about 3/4 deep/thick. I wasnt feeding the "Ol Man" directly thinking he was getting enough in crumbs.
I feed him by hand now krill, 3X a week.
he getts along great with the blue spotted male goby.
He is going into a 30 gallon LR/LS tank with some Mantis shrimp we've found...the Mshrimp are way cool!!
I havnt quite figured out how Ill be able to feed the "Ol Man" by hand after we introduce the Mantis Shrimp. I wont be sticking my hands in the tank, for sure.

I started my 55 gallon reef with a sea-clone. Then I upgraded to a Prizm and wasnt impressed so I upgraded to a Prizm Pro and still wasnt impressed. With as often as you have to clean/adjust these skimmers they should produce a lot more skimmate then they do. I then upgraded to a Remora and I was blown away. I upgraded the pump to a Mag3 and the skimmer was fantastic.. It blows away the other skimmers I have used in the past. I have since upgraded to the Remora Pro and I am still not disappointed.. Fantastic skimmer if you are looking for something out of sump. If you are looking for something in sump I agree with Chris on the EuroReef recommendation. I use a CS 8-1 and CS 12-1. If you have the space you cant beat these skimmers.. I am running them in a 150 gallon rubbermaid sump. They are beefy skimmer so you do need some space. I have read Deltec makes a very good skimmer, but I have never used one.

HTH,

Brian

the prizm is a POS in MHO.
toss that sucker and make a DIY skimmer. that pump might still be worth using with mesh mod.
