My question is somewhat simple but I can not seam to find any information directly pertaining to this. I have done quite a bit of reseach and read alot of articles, (I know, It is just brushing the edges), I am thinking about a live rock tank w/protien skimmer, Live sand bottum with a partial Jaubert set up. LR&skim to break down amonia and Jaubert to aid in nitrate removal. There will also be a sump for mechanical and carbon filtration. Will the two types of filtration work against each other? Possibly only 50 percent of the tank floor. Any thoughts or experience would be appriciated

The two filtration methodologies won't work against each other, but it should be noted plenum/Jaubert systems are out of favor for a couple of years now. A lot of people have noted long term problems with this type of filtration, and all reports suggest that going with a simple deep sand bed (DSB) is not only easier, but healthier. That is what I recommend for you instead of the Jaubert.

Hope that helps!

Thank you

A good DSB is about 3-5" deep and constituted of fine argonite sand. People have different recommendations of what size sand to use; mine is 45% Caribsea "Special Grade" (1.25 - 1.95 mm grain), 45% Caribsea Oolitic (.5 - 1 mm) and 10% Fiji Live sand. This is one of many successful compositions I've seen recommended for sandbeds.
