My scooter blenny has this bulbous red lump on one of its fins. THe fin is one it uses to scoot around. He seems to be happy and still moving just fine, but it looks pretty disgusting and scary. I don't know what it could be, or even what caused it, and I was hoping someone could tell me what the disease is called so I can research it and figure out a possible treatment.
Well, it came right off, so we can't exactly say that it's anything with any certainty. Not anything I know of, anyway. Not Lympho, not fish TB.. but a parasite would be my very best guess. Goo.. that's such a technical description, I'd need help with the "goo" thing.
Hey guys! It came back! Yikes, its not quite as big, but its still pretty large. So, nobody has heard of a disease with the red bulb on the fin? IT really doesnt look lilke its alive, but who knows. Is there anything else I should mention?
When I posted that, you were at 5551 posts - four more posts, I think, would put you at 5555, but ya blew right by it!
You're right, goo is non-technical and non-specific.. except in the onomatopoeic sense.
I'm going to venture a guess, a very rough guess here, that since it's something that drops off and "re-attaches", you may very well be looking at some sort of parasite. However, when reassessing your description, I cannot help but wonder if somehow his anus is prolapsing, or something similar.
As the Right-man says, a picture could make all the difference.
Well, my camera could never handle such an intricate small subject. Its always too blurry. So, here, I drew it for you. I know the blenny doesnt really look anatomically correct, or even correct in any way, but I just wanted you to see where it was and that I am 99% sure it is not his anus. Although the red blob has since disappeared again.
Wow, cool picture, and that is really quite bizarre. I'm at a loss, as everything I can think of wouldn't just appear, then reappear, so on and so forth. I think you're right about his anus, too.
Right, and part of the problem is that we can't assume that all parasites are described. I'm wondering if the best course would be to catch the fish when this thing's presenting, place it in a tray and try to get some good macro shots (or at least a nice, close gander, see if there's some structure going on there, or if it's just a polymorphic mass).
