I am currently in the process of setting up my first reef tank. It's a 120 gallon with dual overflows. I have a 55 gallon I am using as a sump below it. I am using two submersible pumps. A Mag 9.5 and an older 1200 gph Dolphin pump.

I have 2 400 Watt Metal Halides that I plan to mount in the canopy I am building. The canopy will have one 4" cooling fan and several holes in the top. The back of the canopy will also be open. I am making a very tall canopy so the bulbs will be about 15 inches above the water surface.

Is there anything else I can do at this stage to try and keep the tank cooler? Do you foresee me having huge problems?

I'll let you guys talk to me from your experience because I never had to worry about any heat issues with my PC lighting on my FW tanks.

Thanks!

You may want to use more cooling fans, blowing in and out of the hood. Simi-closed hoods tend to hold more heat.

You could also add a chiller if you find out you still need more cooling,

I was trying to avoid buying a chiller. I haven't skimped on any of the other equipment in this setup and the money pool is just about out.

Set up a small fan that blows air across the water surface in your sump. Plug the fan into the same timer your lights are on to increase evaporation which will cool the water. If that's not enough then adda another fan or two to the canopy to blow across the water there. Make sure the fan is blowing over the water and not just replacing the canopy air.
