Well, MY brain, might be dying too, but actually I think my brain coral is on its way out. My fish got ich - so I pulled them all out to another tank for hyposaline treatment. This allowed my nitrates to come down. The nitrates were the only thing not right on the mark - everything else was fine. Brain is new, about a month in my tank. This is a new tank (just like the owner). The polyps would come out nightly for feeding and it seemed to be doing well. 3 days ago I added a 2 inch layer of fine sand on top of the 3 inched of med sand. Despite tons of washing it still put up a tremendous cloud that even with the Magnum running full time it took 2 full days to clear the tank. Everyone else in the tank is doing well. The gorgonians are full out, the leaf corals are happy and the 3 cleaner shrimp and batch of snails and hermit crabs are all eating and acting normally.

But the poor brain. I noticed this morning that a patch on it had turned lighter green and looked funny. On close exam this area appears bubbled. You can see both the depressions and the ridges lifting. As the water flow moves over the brain this bubbled area wavers and flutters - like the surface of a bubble. After work the affected area is 4 times the size of this morning. I don't know what I've done (if it was me) or the stress of shipment took this long to show up or this is what happens just before an alien comes jumping out of it...... Man this hobby is frustrating. My coral book says nothing about this.

How old is your tank??? Corals do all kinds of wierd stuff..I have some torch coral that I could swear sometimes looks like its dying then the next day its good as new...I hope your tank isn't younger than a few months...It needs to be at least 6-months old for brain coral.

It's tough to say for sure, but it sounds like the fine sand may have irritated your brain coral. If that's the case and the water has since cleared (provided other parameters are good) I would expect it to recover in time.
