Oops I bought a flowerpot coral...

Funny....but the exact same thing happened to me. I also have a flower pot because the LFT said that they were easy to keep. It seems to be doing ok; it shrinks up at night and looks like the top of Half Dome and then extends itself into this huge monster during the day. It’s interesting because it triples in size during the day and all of the polyps (if that’s what you can call them) extend and fill up with water. The fish store also told me that two angels would be ok together and I have a pygmy angel and what he told me was a Coral Beauty, but I think that it's something else.
Does anyone else have a flower pot? If so, do you have any feedback or advice for its care?
I also learned that Angels aren't really good reef fish. I'm not going to listed to them anymore. Now, I try to take one of my books with me to my LFS.

No one else responded to this post so, I got curious and started reading about it on other sites. I looked up Goniopora (aka: flower pot) coral on www.wetwebmedia.com and now, I understand why no one else responded. I understand that they almost always parish and only a small percentage of them live for longer than a year. I also read that they can kill everything else in your tank. It’s surprising because it seems to be doing so well. It opens every day and triples in size; it’s also very pretty. It’s a bummer, but I guess I’ll call the LFS and ask them to take it back.

hey i have a flower pot for 2 years now, I love it. Look under the photography corner and tell me if it looks anything like that. It being one of the first corals i got same thing LFS said o its easy to take care of. They never told me that enevitably it will die. But it has been alive for 2yrs and spawned or something. I found a new one on the complete opposite side of the tank. Do you add any supplements to your tank, do you have other types of coral? Well if you have any other queastions feel free to pm me.

Well this is what I have found out so far...Flowerpots like tanks that aren't as clean as most tanks...They prefer tanks without skimmers and your supposed to have alot of nutrients in the tank...which sucks because I have a torch coral as well in there...My flowerpot is doing well so far..its a red flowerpot which is supposedly more rare and easier to take care of. It opens up huge during the day and closes up alot at night. I'm having more trouble with a bubble coral right now that doesn't look so good, go figure.

i have a green torch for about 2 months now. Torch and Goni. seem to love the tank. They both open fully and are doing really well. The torch like my brain both accept formula 2 pellets. Its really cool.

Yes, it does look like that, but it's green. I don't have a skimmer and I use tap water. I have been adding the following supplements, but was going to cut everything out except for the B-Ionic. I also target feed the corals every other day with Liquid Life.

B-Ionic Calcium Buffer System #1 Alkalinity & #2 Calcium

Do you have any other suggestions for me? Do you have any clown fish? Last night, my clown fish started paying more attention to the flower pot and I don't think the Goni appreciated it very much.

Some of this thread is making fun of a certain unnamed RDO member who likes his tap water and skimmerless system, and can do magical things with crushed oyster shell.
Take some time and read some post, and then you can join in on the joke!
Do not worry about your flowerpot too much, they are notoriuosly hard to keep. I would agree with you on cutting back all your suplementation except for the calcium. Just keep up with water changes and the other levels in your water will be OK. The tap water is not a bad thing if your areas water is alright. Most (except the unnamed) like to use RO water. Again, whatever works for you.

So, I did a search on RO and Tap, but haven't found anything yet, but I'll keep checking. I think the SO would kill me if I told him that we had to get something that does RO and DI and a skimmer and that and the other thing....a refugium for corepods (whatever the heck they are). You have no idea how much of a struggle it was to get the UV sterilizer and the lights. OMG!
He wanted a FO tank, but unfortunately, I feel in love with a clown that made friends with an anemone and ever since then I have been trying to offer the clowns a substitute for the anemone because the LFS said that anemone’s were really hard to keep and almost always die in closed systems. I read the Conscious Marine Aquarium and saw that clowns like leather and mushroom corals so, we picked those because they were “easy” to keep. Then I made the mistake of going to another LFS, without my book and that’s how I ended up with the Flower Pot.
So, that’s my story and hopefully that “junior member” tag will disappear after a few more posts….ok, I’m up to 18 now!

The main problem w/ tap water is that:
a) Chlorine/Chloramine
b) Misc Chems and minerals
Chlorine will dissapear with time and airation. You can also remove it with various additives.
The second issue generally leads to algal and cyano blooms. If this is not a problem, don't worry about your tap water too much.
Clowns are not picky either. They do fine without an anemone or even a suitable replacement. Mine have been fine sleeping up by the return pipes for a long time. They are happy, trust me!
