I have a filter that hangs off the back of the tank, and my clean up snails keep escaping! They are climbing up the tray the water flows over to get back into the tank. Anyone have any suggestions to keep the sweeties contained? I've added a pic of my filter (well, a similar one)

I've been toyung with a screen cage type of thing, but before I bought my supplies, I wondered if aynone had asimilar experience?

Thank you,
Anne

Basically, any screen or "eggcrate" type material between the overflow and the water should do the trick. Eggcrate would be easiest as you can glue it directly to the plastic at the very bottom of the lip for the overflow. But some of the smaller snails like Nerites can still fit through, so you might have to wrap the eggcrate with nylon mesh (like those made for screen doors/windows) to prevent the little guys from getting out.

Are they getting OUT of the tank or filter at all?

I have a HOB wet dry just like you have (or similar) and the snails creep up and into it, then eventually find their way back. Nothing wrong with them doing this, and in fact they will help keep the "dump" of the hang on clean. I say let them go where they want. Snails are very good at not leaving far from water and shouldn't end up on the floor.

IME, it doesnt make sense to get egg crate for this. I dislike egg crate. It cuts down the availble light to the tank.

They're getting out and down the back, out to my dresser! I've propprd the filter up a little and kinda pulled the intake tube(submersed in the water) forward a little. I've had no incedences since. I got a few more snails for cleanup of this AWFUL, brown algae thats growing on every surface in my tank, and they aren't doing a thing in the way of eating it....

Bleeeech!!

Thanks for the tip!
