Hi everyone,
We are new to marine aquariums and we are hearing conflicting information in regards to live rock being a substantial biofilter in a 40 gallon tank. We would really appreciate your opinions on the need for a mechanical biofilter if we are using live rock.
All opinions very much appreciated!

Thanks

Hello and :welcome:

The live rock will provide the necessary biological filtration - no need for additional bio-filters. I highly recommend the use of a good protein skimmer, lots of circulation (powerheads, etc.) and a pure, reliable water source as well (ie. RO, RO/DI, etc.). With those elements in combination with some decent lighting, you have the core ingredients for a successful reef.

Take a look at the beginner's guide in our library for a good basic overview of setting up a reef.

Agreed, I only use a skimmer and my 60 or so pounds of LR in my 49 gallon.
